Integrate the tested functionalities into basic prototype, that can be used for some practical tests.
The workflow should look like this:

  • Wakeup
  • Take a picture
  • Save it to the sd card
  • Read battery data
  • Read location data
  • Transmit the image, location data, battery state
  • Receive time to next image
  • Go to sleep for that time

Required: A test server that accepts image data and returns simple control data (time to next image) to the device.
Run the device for some time. Analyze what takes time.
